Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was founded on the simple belief that sorority elitism and socializing should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations – to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day. On January 16, 1920, Zeta began as an idea conceived by five coeds at Howard University in Washington D.C.: Triumphant Founder Arizona Cleaver Stemons, Triumphant Founder Pearl Anna Neal, Triumphant Founder Viola Tyler Goings, Triumphant Founder Myrtle Tyler Faithful, and Triumphant Founder Fannie Pettie Watts. These five women dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood.

The Sorority has chartered hundreds of chapters in the US, Caribbean, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa and has initiated more than 125,000 women. Zeta‘s national and local programs include the endowment of its National Educational Foundation, community outreach services and support of multiple affiliate organizations, such as the March of Dimes and the American Heart Association. Zeta chapters and auxiliaries have given untotaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change.

Since its inception, the Sorority has chronicled a number of firsts. Zeta Phi Beta was the first Greek-letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa (1948); to form adult (Zeta Amicae) and youth auxiliary (Archonettes, Amicettes, and Pearlettes) groups; to centralize its operations in a national headquarters; and to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.

Z-HOPE

Zetas Helping Other People Excel

Since 1920, the legacy of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has been firmly secured in the sorority’s service to the community and all humanity. Building on that legacy, Zeta adopted a national service program that is viable for the 21st century and, more importantly, meets the critical societal needs that impact Black America and International Women of Color.

As we work on our goals of creating new programs, events and partnerships within our community, we continue to serve and implement various national programs through our Z-HOPE initiative (Zetas Helping Other People Excel), continuing our partnerships with March of Dimes, Elder Care and so much more.

Z-HOPE Overview:

Z-HOPE: Is a holistic, multidimensional outreach program. One of the primary goals of Z-HOPE is to enhance, cultivate and empower participants to develop health-promoting lifestyle choices in all stages of their lives.

Z-HOPE targets five major populations (women, youth, men, seniors and international women of color) by utilizing a life-span approach to reach all people…from the young to the old, from prenatal to geriatric. Each targeted population is serviced by its local Zeta chapter or affiliate group through a holistic framework that focuses on the three essential elements of life: mind, body and spirit.

Z-HOPE Addresses topics such as:

Responsible sexual behavior

Domestic violence

Stress management

Caregiving

Estate planning

Homeland Security

Disaster preparedness

Common physical illnesses that affect persons of color (stroke, diabetes, heart attack, cancer)

Triple Negative Breast Cancer

This form of breast cancer is more aggressive and often labeled more difficult to treat. It has also been found to occur disproportionately in young African American women. Zeta chapters have begun adding information about triple negative breast cancer to build awareness and support efforts of health care professionals and organizations recommending earlier breast health testing.
